If you visit Masiphumelele Primary School in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha today, you are in for a surprise. A previously unused classroom has been transformed into a vibrant, energetic space where children are able to have fun and learn at the same time. The Learning Innovation Design Lab allows learners from previously disadvantaged communities to engage with technology through computer games and creative workshops. The initiative has already inspired an interest in information technology and design in roughly 100 children who may not have been previously exposed to them.

Although, there had been hopes for an economic boost which did not materialise in the form it was anticipated, South Africa’s FiFa World Cup 2010 was a success story. The deliverables were clearly set: Build stadiums, manage infrastructure, and provide safety for an event that would merely endure 4 weeks. In turn, the deliverables for World Design Capital 2014 are far from clear, a fact which on one hand provides an opportunity to shape the scope around the unique requirements and capacity of the region, but also bears the risk of disappointed expectations on the other. The World Design Capital project should be used as an opportunity to focus on developing change strategies following a bigger vision, instead of settling in on preconceived expectations for solutions.
“Design is an open ended exercise at the best of times, but early involvement narrows the target area. The different design disciplines involved in a project should also work as a team, to align efforts. Branding, communication and product designers often work in isolation from each other leading to an incoherent result.”
