| Interactive Aquarium |

The Interactive Galaxy Fish Tank is an 8 metre projection displayed on a glass divider wall, developed and built by Formula D interactive in collaboration with Wireframe Studios for Ogilvy, Cape Town. The large, futuristic installation at the Galaxy nightclub in Athlone, Cape Town shows a surreal deep-sea aquarium. The imagery alters according to the number of people inside the VIP area. This is achieved by means of electronic sensors above the door, which detect movement in and out of the VIP lounge.
For each VIP that enters, a unique sea creature is born into the aquarium, and for each VIP that leaves, a sea creature disappears. This installation presents a novel and useful means to indicate how busy the lounge is at any time. Revellers can also interact with the display through their cell phones. Every pack of a specific cigarette brand bought at the nearby bar counter contains a sticker with a cell phone number on it. Users who send a text message to this number can watch their messages float through the water, then flip over and pass by the other way, allowing people on the other side of the wall to read them too.
Nightclub staff can also use this functionality to communicate with their patrons. By means of a private admin-only number, staff can publish special announcements to the screen, which float by in a distinctly different design to those sent by visitors.
At random intervals, spectacular animations fill the entire screen space. Revellers stand in wonder as a massive whale swims by, or large schools of fish swarm across the screen. An extra special event can be triggered by the visitors themselves. By sending an SMS to a certain number, users summon a large, surreal mermaid, who blows a kiss at them before disappearing back into the ocean depths.
