At the end of 2013, The Learning Innovation Design Lab teamed up with Connect Community Development NPC to explore how our initiative could benefit the Khayelitsha community. Connect had identified the crucial need for after school activities in disadvantaged communities to aid youth development and thus conceptualised the After School Action Plan. We saw this as a great opportunity to pilot a gaming center in an extramural context; and so the first Play to Learn Lab was born. We transformed an empty classroom into a vibrant, energetic space where children could learn and have fun. We hope that this programme will inspire an interest in technology and design in children who may not have otherwise been exposed to this technology.
The Play to Learn Lab pilot project at Masiphumelele Primary School was completes in May 2014.
